Purpose

MCL Department

NE

In 1991 a handful of veterans chartered Department — NE. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.

People point to the detachment for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — NE. The members would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.

Meetings are the first Thursday at 7:00 PM, at the hall — NE. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the detachment might use.

    Notes from the first meeting

MCL Department of Nebraska. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the detachment already knows. The members voted to keep the spring scholarship on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — NE.

Showing up for the spring scholarship — NE

By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Department set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — NE.

What the notebook says so far

Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the first Thursday at 7:00 PM. This note is a sample of how the detachment might tell that year — NE.
