Purpose

MCL Detachment #1299

Mt. Vernon OH

In 1995 a handful of veterans chartered Detachment 1299 — Mt. Vernon, OH. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.

The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

Meetings are the third Wednesday at 6:30 PM, at the hall — Mt. Vernon. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the detachment might use.

    Notes from the first meeting

Knox County #1299. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the detachment already knows. The members voted to keep the spring scholarship on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — Mt. Vernon, OH.

Showing up for the spring scholarship — Mt. Vernon

By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Detachment 1299 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Mt. Vernon.

What the notebook says so far

Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the third Wednesday at 6:30 PM. This note is a sample of how the detachment might tell that year — Mt. Vernon, OH.
