In 1963 a handful of veterans chartered Detachment 153 — Lincoln Park, MI. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

By spring the hall had the Memorial Day wreath underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Detachment 153 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Lincoln Park.

Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook.
