Purpose

MCL Detachment #394

Portsmouth NH

In 1961 a handful of veterans chartered Detachment 394 — Portsmouth, NH. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.

The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

Meetings are 2nd Monday, 7:00 PM, at the hall — Portsmouth. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the detachment might use.

    Notes from the first meeting

Seacoast #394. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the detachment already knows. The members voted to keep a Saturday of hall repairs on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — Portsmouth, NH.

What the notebook says so far

Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is 2nd Monday, 7:00 PM. This note is a sample of how the detachment might tell that year — Portsmouth, NH.
