- Legion Post #281
- Shelter Is, NY
In 1960 a handful of veterans chartered Post 281 — Shelter Is, NY. From that first meeting the post grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
People point to the post for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — Shelter Is. The Legionnaires would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.
Meetings are the first Thursday at 7:00 PM, at the hall — Shelter Is. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the post might use.

Notes from the first meeting
American Legion Post 281. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the post already knows. The Legionnaires voted to keep a Saturday of hall repairs on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — Shelter Is, NY.

Showing up for a Saturday of hall repairs — Shelter Is
By spring the hall had a Saturday of hall repairs underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 281 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Shelter Is.

What the notebook says so far
Late summer the post looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the first Thursday at 7:00 PM. This note is a sample of how the post might tell that year — Shelter Is, NY.
