American Legion Post 47 Joseph L Davis, the American Legion Post 47 — Hvre De Grace, MD. The post dates to 1959, when veterans home from the Second World War and Korea wanted a room of their own and a way to keep serving after the uniform came off.
The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the Legionnaires hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

By spring the hall had the Memorial Day wreath underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 47 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Hvre De Grace.

Late summer the post looked back at the notebook.
