VFW Post 3437 Sweet Home. Its post has met since 1928 — Sweet Home, OR. The charter came in the years after the World Wars, and the comrades who stayed treated the monthly meeting as a standing promise: show up, look after one another, and leave the town a little better.
The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the comrades hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

By spring the hall had a Saturday of hall repairs underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 3437 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Sweet Home.

Late summer the post looked back at the notebook.
