VFW Post #5897 — Lavonia, GA. Service and a meeting hall — Lavonia.
- VFW Post #5897
- Lavonia, GA
In 1921 a handful of veterans chartered Post 5897 — Lavonia, GA. From that first meeting the post grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
People point to the post for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — Lavonia. The comrades would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.
The meeting line says the second Tuesday at 7:00 PM, which is the rhythm the directory lists. Come for the business, stay for the people. The portraits and the posts here are sample material, standing in until the post writes its own — Lavonia, GA.

Showing up for a Saturday of hall repairs — Lavonia
By spring the hall had a Saturday of hall repairs underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 5897 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Lavonia.

What the notebook says so far
Late summer the post looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the second Tuesday at 7:00 PM. This note is a sample of how the post might tell that year — Lavonia, GA.
